After the bets in a Caribbean poker are placed and cards are dealt, we base our hand strength on a face up card of the dealer. After studying everything, we decide whether to push through with the play or fold. Here are some factors to consider.
If the dealer does not hold an AK or something higher, our bet will be returned to us with additional winnings equal to the amount we placed in the Ante bet. If, for instance, the dealer holds an AK or something higher but our hand still proves stronger, we win. The dealer pays us even money on our Ante bet plus fixed winnings on our call bet, with this rule:
We're paid even for holding a pair or at least a high card. We're paid 2 is to 1 when we have two pairs. The dealer pays us 3 is to 1 if we have three of a kind. We're paid 4 is to 1 if we hold a straight, while 5 is to 1 if we have a flush. A full house hand is paid off 7 is to 1 and four of a kind gets a handsome 20 is to 1. A straight flush for a hand rewards us with a 50 is to 1, and the best hand, a royal flush, pays us 100 is to 1.
However, if luck's on the side of the house and the dealer gets an AK or something higher while we have a losing hand, we lose our Ante and call bets to the house. If we bet for the jackpot we lose that, too. If we hold a higher hand, we win an even pay on the Ante and regular bets with the ratio given above. If we should win even with a pair or AK, we're paid 1 is to 1.
One of the good features of Caribbean poker is the moment the dealer does not qualify—when the dealer's hand is not an AK or anything higher—we automatically get back our bets and get additional even pays on our ante. We don't need fresh money for the next betting, and the same with the jackpot bet. The good thing about jackpot bets is that losing in the regular game may be more than offset by the jackpot win.
